Role Summary Reporting to the Manager Flight Operations Training, the Flight Operations Instructional Designer & Trainer I is responsible for the creative and technical development and implementation of training programs for pilots. This role analyzes, designs, develops, implements, and evaluates Flight Operations (pilot) courseware in conjunction with Flight Courseware Developer/Instructors, Fleet Captain, Fleet Standards, Chief Pilot, Safety and Training personnel as required to support Flight Operations training requirements. The courseware trains pilots on general operations topics, aircraft systems, and flight procedures to enable safe aircraft operation using standardized procedures during normal and abnormal operations.

Scope & Complexity

  • This position supports flight operations instructional systems design activities for Alaska Airlines.

Key Duties

  • Develops ground and flight training lessons under the guidance of the other team members.

  • Assists instructors in preparation for ground training activities.

  • Assist pilots with both content and technology questions to ensure completion of the training objectives.

  • Monitors classroom assets (virtual simulators and mulita media platforms) for proper functionality and coordinates repair and improvements.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job-Specific Skills (years of experience, key knowledge, skills & abilities) Required

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a related field.

  • A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree, with a focus in instructional system design, graphics design, adult education, aviation, or related discipline.

  • Knowledge of Instructional Systems Design (ISD).

  • Computer skills utilizing word processing, presentation, CBT authoring, web development, mobile development, and graphics software.

  • Self-motivated, with demonstrated problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently or as a team member for group projects.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.


  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud software including FrameMaker authoring and publishing documentation.

  • Experience with Articulate Storyline eLearning authoring software.

  • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS).

  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems (CMS).

  • Knowledge of video filming /editing /production.

  • Knowledge of class room design principles and classroom technology integration.

  • Pilot, Dispatch, or A&P; license

  • Basic understanding of aircraft systems theory, function, and operation.
